General Information--2024 Election


**The NEW 2024 Primary Election date is Tuesday, July 30, 2024.**


  • All petition sheets with the election date of August 6, 2024, will be accepted, DO NOT correct petitions that voters have already signed.  Petitions with the August 6 primary date in the header are grandfathered in and will be valid during the filing period.  However, any signatures collected on or after the effective date of 2/9/24 must bear the primary election date of July 30, 2024, in the header.   
  •  DO NOT submit a new statement of interest. If you have already submitted a Statement of Interest with the August 6 Primary Date, it is grandfathered in and will be considered valid for this filing period
  • NOTE: The candidate filing period for the Primary Election has changed as follows:  (Please make a note of these new filing deadlines as they are critical.) 
  • FIRST DAY to file Nomination Papers (150 days before date of election) is Monday, March 4, 2024;
  • LAST DAY to file nomination papers (120 days before date of election) is Monday, April 1, 2024.  


The City's next primary election will be held July 30, 2024, and the next general election will be held on November 5, 2024.  There are a total of four seats open on the Cottonwood City Council for this election cycle:  The Mayor and three Council Member seats as follows:

Mayor:  Tim Elinski-Term Expires November 2024

Council Members:  Helaine Kurot, Derek Palosaari, and Michael Mathews-Terms Expire November 2024.  

To be eligible to vote in the Primary Election to be held on JULY  30, 2024, you must be registered to vote by JULY 1, 2024.

To be eligible to vote in the General Election to be held on November 5, 2024, you must be registered to vote by October 7, 2024.

Candidate nomination packets may be picked up at the Cottonwood City Clerk's Office beginning on January 8, 2024.  Candidates will be required to meet with the City Clerk to discuss the election process.

Candidates must file a Statement of Interest with the City Clerk prior to circulating nomination petitions for signature.  All open seats will require a minimum of 122 qualified voter signatures, but no more than 244 qualified voter signatures.   Nomination Paper and Declaration of Qualifications, Nomination Petitions, and Finance Disclosure Forms must be filed with the City Clerk no later than MARCH 4, 2024, but no earlier than APRIL 1, 2024, for the candidate's name to appear on the ballot.  A qualified voter may not sign more than one nomination petition for the position of Mayor, and no more than three nomination petitions for the position of Council Member.  

Candidates who receive a majority of votes cast at the primary election shall be declared elected to the office.  If more candidates receive a majority of votes at the primary than there are offices to be filled, then those equal in number to the offices to be filled receiving the highest number of votes shall be declared elected.  If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast, then the primary is considered to be a primary election for nomination of candidates, and the general election shall be held to vote for candidates to fill the offices open for election.
